What is Satellite TV?  Back to top

In the 1970s, the United States began placing satellites in orbit around the equator to better distribute radio signals. Programmers quickly realized the advantages of this type of distribution and by the mid-70s, programmers like TBS, HBO, and Showtime were sending their programming across the continent. The cost and ease of distributing signals this way was quickly realized and now virtually all of today's national cable programming is distributed via satellite.

How is this done? By placing a satellite in a special orbit called geosynchronous or geostationary, it appears to remain still to planet Earth. It is, in fact, traveling at the same relative speed as the surface of the planet. This orbital path is named after famed science writer Arthur C. Clarke and goes by The Clarke Belt. Clarke described the orbital satellite arc in a paper in 1947! This apparently stationary position allows for easy pointing to the satellite which in turn allows for easy transmission and reception of radio wave signals. Satellite uplinkers point large, high-powered dishes at the satellite and send up a variety radio signals including data, telephone traffic, and most interesting, television. Satellite TV viewers point smaller versions of a dish at these same geostationary satellites and can receive over 250 channels of cable type programming as well as dozens of special channels.

Dish Size: In the early days of satellite TV, dish sizes ranged from 10 to 24 feet -- not something that many families would like to have standing around in their backyard. Today, dishes range in size from six to 10 feet, with the bulk of new dishes in the 7.5-foot range. They are smaller, lighter, and less obtrusive making them easy to place on top of a roof or camouflage with attractive landscaping.

Receiver: There are several different brands of satellite TV integrated receiver descramblers, or IRDs. All of them perform similar functions and each has its own set of special features. Your TV viewing preferences may determine which type of IRD you choose.

Today's receivers are equipped with a VideoCipher Renewable Security module that allows the user to pay for and watch subscription programming. Its function is virtually transparent to the TV viewer.

The latest incarnation of the satellite receiver contains the ability to receive analog radio and video, VideoCipher analog video and digital audio, and DigiCipher digital video and audio via the DigiCipher II compression technology. This latest generation of satellite television is called 4DTV.

Analog and Digital Signals: Signals delivered via satellite come in many shapes and sizes. Some of them are radio type waves which vary in amplitude and frequency to create the pictures and sound. Others are delivered digitally and converted into pictures and sound via digital converters in the satellite receiver. Both types of pictures are of the highest quality.

250 Channels: With the combination of analog, VideoCipher, and digital channels available on satellite TV, there are over 250 regular channels and dozens of specialty channels for occasional viewing. Even if you choose not to subscribe, there are many worthwhile programming options. However, subscribing opens the doors to a vast new world.

How do I know if I can receive satellite TV?  Back to top

Site Survey: To determine whether or not you can receive satellite signals, the first step will be to see if you have an open view of the southern skies -- provided you live north of the equator. If such a view seems to exist, a site survey will be necessary to determine exactly where the best location for a satellite dish lies. Your local satellite retailer can perform this function.

Trees and Other Objects: If your view of the southern skies is obstructed, either by trees, buildings, or mountains, you may still be able to receive part of the wide array of programming available via satellite.

What about Programming?  Back to top

Local Programming: While satellite TV delivers the widest possible array of programming, it cannot deliver your local channels. You can still receive local channels with the use of an aerial antenna, rabbit ears, or outdoor antenna. When you turn your satellite receiver off, the local programming is routed directly to your TV.

Sports: Although ESPN may be the most visible sports network, the amount of sports channels to be found on satellite is mind-boggling. There are several sports-only channels available to dish owners. Most of them offer a regional team's games for viewing in the team's franchised area. These channels include: NewSport, Home Team Sports, Houston Sports Entertainment, Madison Square Garden, New England Sports Network, SportsChannel, Prime Sports, and Sunshine.

Movies: There are movies of every variety available every hour of the day and night.

There are several subscription services on satellite -- HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and The Movie Channel to name just a few. These programmers feature specialized programming and movie features which include the most recent box office hits, concerts by your favorite groups and musicians, comedy show specials, and original shows created by the programmers themselves.

Television "superstations" provide many of the old classics as well as the tops in syndicated programs.

Other programmers providing, but not limited to, movie fare include The Disney Channel, PBS, Arts & Entertainment, Fox Family Channel, Bravo, American Movie Classics, The Independent Film Channel, and The Playboy Channel. All of these programmers provide high-quality fare that caters to all types of television preferences. All of the above, and many more, are available through satellite TV.

Specialty Programming: In addition to movies and sports, satellite TV offers a myriad of specialty programming such as adult services, shopping channels, music channels, and many foreign language programs including German, Portuguese, Japanese, Spanish, Greek, and Dubai.

Special Feeds: One of the unique features of satellite TV is the presence of special feeds. Special feeds are programs delivered to network affiliates at predetermined times for rebroadcast at a later date or time. These feeds include many of the most popular syndicated programs. And best of all, special feeds are free.

Pay-Per-View: The latest trend is toward pay-per-view services. Pay-per-view (PPV) is the concept of paying only for what you watch. Presently, there are several PPV providers of which TVN is the most prolific with 10 channels in operation 24-hours per day. Other PPV providers include Cable Video Store (CVS), Action PPV, Viewers Choice, Request TV, XXXpose, and XXXotica to name a few.

Through this assortment of PPV providers, viewers can watch the latest blockbusters shortly after their release on video. PPV can save trips to a video store and the aggravation of the movie you want being out of stock.

Pay-per-view is accomplished via the reception of the signals via satellite and the reporting of those purchases through your telephone line. The reporting is automatic and does not incur any phone charges.

Parental Guidance: Lest you begin to fret that young eyes may be subjected to adult material, fear not. Satellite receivers have a number of ways to control the household viewing. Viewing can be controlled by movie rating and channel lock out with password protection.

Subscription Prices: Prices for subscriptions are low and significantly less than you would pay for comparable cable if you could even find it. On satellite, you get five HBO channels when you purchase just one. You get three Showtime channels when you purchase just one. The list goes on.

You can subscribe to few or as many as you wish and an annual bill can range from $25 to as much as you can afford. That is as little as two dollars per month!

Are there any zoning restrictions?  Back to top

In the Past, Dishes Were Larger: When early satellite dishes were constructed, the electronics were inferior, the satellites less powerful, and the mechanics of a satellite dish not as finely honed. Hence, the dish had to be large to collect enough signal to help construct sound and pictures. It was not uncommon to see 12-foot dishes dotting the landscape.Zoning boards did not take kindly to these behemoths.

Today, 7.5-Foot is Common: With the more powerful satellites of today, the higher grade electronics, and nearly 20 years of engineering fine tuning, dish sizes have come down to six feet in some areas. The most common antenna today is the 7.5-foot dish which is small enough to be roof mounted or camouflaged with landscaping materials and shrubs. Zoning boards are much more forgiving of these smaller dishes.

I have a Home Theater system, how will Satellite TV work with it?  Back to top

Satellite TV provides very high-quality pictures and sound to users. Displaying this top-notch signal on a 19-inch, 10-year-old TV is almost counterproductive. Satellite TV makes an excellent source for home theater, the latest rage in consumer electronics. But what is home theater?

Home theater is the process of duplicating, as near as possible, the theater experience in your own home. Home theaters range in construction from the incorporation of a simple Dolby Pro Logic surround processor and surround speakers to the full-blown usage of red velvet curtains, special seating, automated light dimming, and front projectors on a motorized screen. The average home theater lies somewhere in between.

According to the Electronic Industries Association, the group that establishes standards for consumer electronics, a home theater should consist of at least the following:

A 27-inch or larger TV: In order to get the most out of today's higher resolution sources such as satellite TV, laserdisc, and S-VHS, a larger screened TV is preferable. Many of the movie releases are now being issued in their original wide screen format and larger screens will help get the full benefit of these screen ratios.

Dolby Pro Logic Surround: Dolby Pro Logic provides signals for separate left, right, center, and surround channels.

Front left, center, and right speakers: The center channel helps provide proper dialog sound imaging. Left and right speakers give a lateral motion to a movie's main sound.

Rear left and right speakers: With two rear speakers, even though the signal sent to them is monaural, the feeling of depth is enhanced a great deal, drawing the viewer further into the movie.

A laser disc or S-VHS player: A home theater is only as good as its source material. Laser disc and S-VHS provide exceptional resolution over standard VHS, cable, or local broadcast. Satellite TV also provides an enhanced resolution.

What if I have other components?  Back to top

One or more subwoofers: Subwoofers help reproduce the extreme low frequencies in a movie sound track. If you want to feel the "thud" or the "boom" of home theater, you need at least one, more if you have a large room.

A front or rear projection TV: Projection TVs have the advantage of displaying larger pictures than their picture tube counterparts. Rear projection TVs can get as large as 80 inches (diagonally) and can be viewed in a normally lit room.

Front projection requires much more ambient light control. They need to be viewed in darkened rooms with little other light, but they offer picture sizes to 100 inches and high resolution options.

A Dolby AC-3 processor: The next iteration of Dolby processing is Dolby AC-3 which provides for discrete surround channels and a separate subwoofer track. Dolby AC-3 is backward compatible with Dolby Pro Logic.

A management and control system to make operation of the home theater simple: All this equipment can be quite intimidating to the novice, and control of an entire system can be cumbersome. In its simplest stage, a control system can be a unified or learning remote that can control all of your components. In its more advanced stage, a control system can be accomplished with a touch sensitive control screen that can operate your home theater with one touch as well as your house environment, security, and water management systems ... all from your TV screen.

How many TV's can be hooked up?   Back to top

You may hook up as many TV's as you like, but all TV's would view the same channel unless a second Satellitte Receiver is added at another location. You may combine an off the air antenna with your satellite dish to allow you to view another program other than a satellite channel.

Can I receive local channels on the satellite dish?  Back to top

No,an off the air antenna must be used to receive local programming,if you cannot receive an acceptable signal with your antenna Network Programming is available at a additional charge.

How to Tune Your 4DTV Receiver to the G3 Satellite?  Back to top

  1. If you have GB and G4 satellites programmed into your receiver, move your dish to GB-601, verify that you are receiving a good , clear picture of Bloomberg, push Option 5 on your remote control, write down the dish position and skew settings for that satellite. Then push Exit, or View to remove that menu from the tv screen. Move you dish to G4-16, verify that you are getting a good, clear picture on Shepherd's Chapel, push Option 5, write down the dish position and skew settings for that satellite.

2. Subtract the dish position for GB from the dish position of G4. Divide the difference by two and then add the result to the GB dish position. If you calculated correctly, that resulting number should be half-way between the numbers for GB and G4 and will be the proper dish position number for setting G3.

3. Press Option 6, 4, 4, use your arrow keys on your remote control to highlight G3, press Enter. If your screen then says "Change settings", hit Enter again on your remote control. You should now have the main satellite Programming screen on your tv set. Use your down arrow to highlight the dish position number in yellow. Use your left or right arrow keys on your remote control to change the dish position to the number that you calculated in #2 above.

4. Look at the skew settings if they are listed on the tuning screen, make sure they are set the same as GB and G4 were set. for H and V.

5. Push the GO BACK button on your remote control and you should see a small pop-up screen on your tv saying Save setting for G3. Push ENTER and G3 will then be programmed at the position you have selected. Press EXIT, or VIEW, or GO BACK four times to get out of the satellite programming menu.

6. Your dish should now be pointing at G3 satellite. Select a channel that you have programming on, like 500 for CNBC, and the channel should come on your screen.

7. If your receiver does not recognize that there are any digital channels like 500 on G3, then your 4DTV needs to be remapped.

8. To remap a model 922 receiver, move your dish to G1-03, or G1-150, make sure you have a green DC light, turn off the power to your 4DTV, unplug it from the electricity for only 30 seconds., plug it back in and wait approx. 60 minutes before turning the 4DTV back on. The new channels should then be mapped into the memory of your 4DTV. If you then move to G3 and select channel 500, your receiver should have CNBC if you have a subscription to that service.

How to find my Decoder ID and Digital Unit ID?  Back to top

To get the Decoder ID, go to an analog channel such as G5-5 and then press Option - 9-1-1, it will display the board number on TV. To get the Digital Unit ID, go to a digital channel such as G1-3 and then press Option - 6 - 5, it will display the unit ID on TV.

Do I need a re-hit? and how to get a re-hit?  Back to top

Your subscription need a re-hit if your channels saying no subscription. Or when you press SETUP - 0 (on VideoCipher) or OPTION - 9 - 0 (on 4DTV), if it says NS (not authorized) on the last line, you will need a rehit.

Satellite Problems can not fixed by a rehit:
  • Your picture looks scrambled and snowy
  • When you press SETUP or on a 4DTV OPTION 9 , then 0 and nothing happens
  • If the channel is not part of your package or they were never ordered
  • If your receiver is not responding to the remote
  • On a 4DTV you get the message "Continuing to search..."
  • You are not getting the correct satellite, example: The receiver indicates you are on G5-5 but when you check the channel it is not CNN.
Re-hit instructions:

VideoCipher rehit instructions:

1) Tune your receiver to a VideoCipher scrambled channel, such as CNN(G5-5) then on your remote control press SETUP - 0 - 0 (OPTIONS - 9 - 0 - 0 on a 4DTV receiver) to bring up the diagnostic screen. You do NOT have to be a subscriber to the Videocipher channel you decide to use for a rehit.

2) Send an Instant Online Rehit Request.

3) Watch the first four digits of line 7 on the diagnostic screen to update. When any of the FIRST 4 digits of line 7 update, you have received your rehit! Clear the screen by pressing EXIT or VIEW.

DigiCipher (4DTV) rehit instructions:

1) Obtain your VideoCipher Unit ID (OPTIONS - 9 - 1 - 1) or your DigiCipher unit ID (option 6, 5).

2) Tune to one of these digital channels: G1-03, G1-150, G1-167, G5-100.

3) Verify that your DC light is lit up green on the front of your 4DTV receiver indicating you have a digital lock on that channel. If it is not lit, either change to another channel in the list above or tune your dish position or skew settings to get a green DC light on that channel. This light must be lit for you to be able to receive a rehit.

4) Send an Instant Online Rehit Request.

Watch the trip counter(option 6, 5) near the bottom of the screen. When the trip counter updates you have received your rehit for digital services!

NOTES: Please read!

This rehit system will rehit only current digital or analog programming that you have ordered from us for your unit. We cannot rehit active services you may have with other programming packagers.

Rehit results are not guaranteed to solve the problem! Rehits are sent out usually within 2 minutes or less HOWEVER, sometimes the authorization system at Motorola runs behind and rehits can take up to 20 minutes or longer during those times.

Your VideoCipher signal quality must be greater than 65 (or 6.5 on older VideoCipher boards). Do setup 1-1 on any analog subscription channel (1-24). Your DigiCipher signal quality must be greater than 40 (OPTIONS - 6 - 4 - 4 - ENTER on a digital channel) to descramble digital channels.

Why won't my rehit go through?  Back to top

First you'll need to go to satellite G1 channel 3 and verify that you have a green DC light on the front of your receiver. If you do not have the green light you will have to tune G1 with the steps described below. If you do have the green light, and the rehit is still not going through you need to perform a re-initialization. That is Options 6, 7, 7, 8, 0. That will bring up a screen that says Diagnostics you'll just leave it on that screen for a few seconds and then press exit and attempt to do the rehit again. If this still does not work, please contact SPS.

How do I tune my Big Dish?  Back to top

From time to time, it may be necessary to adjust your receiver in order to restore your channels. There are two main adjustments to make: dish position (moving your dish alignment east and west) and skew/polarity (ensuring that your receiver is able to correctly show a channel that is delivered in a horizontal or vertical signal).

Note that some receivers and dish configurations may require additional set up or be placed in a programming mode to accomplish proper programming reception. Whenever programming your receiver, it is recommended that you use your receiver's owner's manual. Your local dealer is also recommended.

When tuning in a 4dtv digital channel, start with analog odd and even numbered channels (from channels 1-24) that you subscribe to on that same satellite and tune them in as well as possible.

How do I adjust my dish position?  Back to top

On your remote control, locate the dish position buttons. Most appear as actual arrows pointing left and right, or even up and down. There might be E (east) or W (west) buttons. Some receivers also have buttons that automatically tune the dish by searching for the strongest signal. These buttons may be named Auto-tune or Dish Tuning.

By pressing the dish position buttons, you may find that your receiver will display a dish position on your screen. Starting on one channel that you know something should be on, will help you recognize what satellite your dish is pointing to. As you are moving the dish position between satellites, the channel that you start on will be the same channel that the receiver will be looking for on other satellites.

On a Motorola 4dtv receiver, you can view the dish position, the skew, and the signal quality on the screen, while making the adjustments. To adjust the dish position on a Motorola 4dtv receiver, first press OPTIONS-6-4-4 on your remote control, then press ENTER on the highlighted satellite you are adjusting, and enter again to change the settings. This puts your receiver in a programming mode. Use your arrow keys to select dish position and manually adjust the 4 digit dish position with your arrow keys until the desired picture appears in the background. Then store your settings by pressing Go Back, then ENTER, then Go Back 4 more times until your channel appears in full screen.

Analog-only receivers work in similar ways. East and West buttons, or left and right or up and down arrows, adjust the dish position.

How do I adjust my skew, or Polarity?  Back to top

Some receivers' remote controls have a polarity, or skew adjustment buttons, while other receivers have a programming mode with these adjustments as an option. Your owner's manual will tell you how to locate the skew/polarity features of your receiver.

For a Motorola 4dtv receiver, the skew adjustment is found while in the programming mode. Get to this mode by pressing Options-6-4-4-Enter. Using your arrow buttons, highlight the areas that show H or V numbers. This is the manual skew adjustment area. You will find that for one channel, only the H setting or only the V setting is possible to adjust. That is because the channel is either a vertical channel or a horizontal channel. Also, you may choose the auto-peak skew adjustment, which should automatically determine whether the channel is a horizontal or vertical channel.

What does this message mean?  Back to top

With your C-band system you will run into a few different messages, this will briefly explain what each message you may receive really means.

A subscription is required to view this program:   This means that you need to contact SPS to get a subscription to the channel. If you know that you are subscribed, but you are still receiving this message, then you need to get reauthorized, or rehit. This can be easily done with our instant online rehit, or you can contact us and one of our CSRs will be happy to do this for you.

Cannot find channel continuing to search, or Please wait a moment, we are processing your request ... :  These two messages indicate that you need to do tuning with the steps above. Sometimes the processing your request message will be displayed when guide information is being downloaded. In that instance, you do not need to do any tuning just wait a moment for the guide to download.

This satellite is beyond your limits:  This message is displayed when you try to move to a satellite that is beyond the limits that were set when your receiver was installed. When you get this message when trying to move to a satellite that you normally view, you may need to reset your limits. You need to be careful when doing this to avoid damage to your dish.

Unable to view ratings information program may be locked out:  This message could either mean that you have set your receiver to lock out unrated programs or sometimes this can be a technical difficulty with the broadcast itself.

Why is it so hard for me to get HBO/Cinemax channels?  Back to top

The HBO and CINEMAX digital channels on G1 satellite can be very difficult to receive and maintain for some 4DTV owners because of the weak signal of the G1 satellite and the compression that HBO uses on those channels. There are several other possible reasons including the aim, size, and condition of your dish, and the age and condition of your LNB.

Why does my receiver skip over channels?  Back to top

When new channels are added they need to be mapped into your receivers memory. Do this by going to a Digicipher channel such as G1-3. Pull up the System Status screen(options, 6, 5) and check the channels in the bottom right corner. You should see the channel count go up within a few minutes if not, unplug the receiver for 20 seconds and try again. If the channels still are not changing after that check to see if the receivers memory is full. You can do that by pressing Options, 6, 0, 5. That will bring up a "Diagnostics A" screen. Press the right arrow key until you see "Diagnostics G". On the top row fifth column to the right you will see a four digit code if it is 1920 your memory is full and you will have to do a master reset and re-program your receiver. To do a master reset you will need to press Options, 6, 7, 7, 8, 7 and then enter to confirm the reset. WARNING: Please process master reset with caution. You will lose all the channels programmed in and will have to reprogram it all again after master reset. Please read this first.

Where did this channel go?  Back to top

As you know, the C-Band industry will occasionally switch channels, satellites. For a list of recent channel changes please visit our channel changes web page. You can also view our Satellite Chart which is up to date. As many of your favorite channels seem to disappear from C-Band please be aware that SPS is the only program provider that has a vested interest in maintaining the industry. We are always working to get you the channels you love. Some channels may move to a different platform or broadcast system, you may have heard of something called PowerVu. PowerVu is a platform that is not typically available to consumers, it requires additional equipment and there is no program providers like SPS for channels that are on PowerVu.

Why am I getting only even or odd analog channel numbers?  Back to top

If you are receiving either all even or odd analog channels on your satellites, you have a bad servo motor. For instance, the even channels on G1 are not coming in at all. When you move to an adjacent satellite C4 or C3 the opposite should be true, your odd channels will not come in. This will not be consistent with your digital channels because they have ten or more compressed onto one transponder, whereas the analog channels each have their own transponder. The servo motor is not a difficult or expensive part to replace.

How to Download the Guide/Info?  Back to top

  How to Download the Guide/Info

1. Make certain #544, #890 or #590 in on account.

2. Go to G1-167 (better than G1-3)

3. If screen has picture (if subscribed to Starz) or clear message of "not subscribed" or requires subscription go to #4.
If no to #3, you must be fine tuned before Guide can be downloaded. Check G1-11 and also G1-12 (should be EWTN and Shop NBC). If no picture on either of those channels, dish is way off & not on G1. Options 644 - auto peak dish/auto peak skew - might work. Goal is to bring in G1. If this doesn't work, you must try to locate G1 (by using Dish position [move east and west]).

4. If yes to #3, check TDT count before sending rehit.
To access TDT: Press Options, 6, 0, 5 and go to Diagnostic G. (move from A to G by pressing left arrow key twice). 4th or 5th column. 4 digit number. Should be approximately 1700-1800. If at 1920 master reset is required. (We do not do master resets for customers)

5. If TDT count less than 1920, send rehit on G1 167 (Options 6, 5) see if trip counter moves. If trip counter moves, have customer exit out of trip counter screen, press their Guide button and wait about 2-3 minutes for guide to begin to download. (You will know guide is downloading because movie names will begin to appear). Then press the info button and please stay on that channel until the channel number (167) shows up on the front of their receiver.

If the guide/info does still not download, AND YOU HAVE A 922, you will need to do a soft reset and call us back for a rehit or use our web-site's on-line rehit. Do not do a soft reset on a DSR-920 - could cause memory loss or unit ID failure. 920 owners should call Motorola.

(soft reset: unplug receiver from power source for 30 seconds, plug back in and wait for wait 30 minutes)

Why can't I got the Fox News on G3-581?  Back to top

Starting from Nov 7 2007, Fox news has moved to G3-581 in digital format. As this is a new channel, some old receiver(DSR920) may need to do a soft-reset and get a rehit to activation. Here are the detail steps:

1. Request a rehit on G1-167 (it has a stronger data stream), make sure green DC light is on in the front of the receiver.
2. Move back to G1-3 and hold down the guide button for about 10 seconds, the guide should come on.(If you have purchased 544 - 4DTV Guide service)
3. Move to G3-581, you should get Fox news now.

If you still don't have it, then you need to do a soft reset. You still may need a rehit - even after the soft reset. Please remember, you might need purchase a 4DTV Guide Service(code 544) on your account, the receiver won't do a proper update without the guide. Some old model receiver might lose satellie settings even after soft reset, please process with caution. SPS has no responsibility for this kind data damage.

Instructions on How to Program W5 Satellite into 4DTV Receivers.  Back to top

W5 is 2 degrees west of W1 Satellite, location: 105 degrees west

W5 is the first satellite West of W1. If customers do not show W5 in the Option 6,4,4 list of satellites to be programmed into their 4DTV, they need to remap their receiver. If they have a model 922, go to G1-03 make sure their DC light is lit up, turn off their 4DTV, unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait 30 minutes, turn it back on and the W5 should then be mapped in so they can program it in.

If you have a 920, do a master reset rather than unplugging the 4DTV, this might lose the unit ID numbers if the battery is dead.

In case the above steps can not bring you W5 satellite, try the following:

1. Move your satellite dish to G4 satellite if you have it programmed into your 4DTV. Go to channel 16, make sure that Shepherds Chapel picture is clear, and press Option 5. Write down the dish position and H and V skew settings on a piece of paper. Press your Exit or View button. Move your dish to G3 satellite and go to any channel that you are subscribed to. Verify the picture is good quality, then press Option 5 and write down the dish position and H and V skew settings. Subtract the G3 dish position from the G4 setting, and divide that number by two. This gives you the number of counts that your satellite dish is programmed between adjacent satellites. Multiply that number by 3, and add that to the G4 dish position. This will give you the approximate position W5 needs to be programmed at in your 4DTV.

2. Push Option 6, 4, 4, highlight the W5 satelite icon, and push Enter. Type in 603 to select channel 603 on W5 satellite. Then, use your down arrow to go to the dish position number and use your left and right arrow keys to move the dish position to the number you calculated in step 1, above, which is the W5 location. Wait a few seconds to see if ALTV picture comes on your screen behind the satellite programming menu. Make sure that the H and V settings are the same as G3 and G4. Use your left and right arrow keys to adjust the dish position to get the highest value for quality that you can get, then press GO BACK and ENTER to save that dish position and skew settings in memory. Then press Exit or View to get out of the programming.

3. Follow these instructions in the event W5 does not appear in the list of satellites available to be programmed. After pressing Option 6, 4, 4, you need to remap your 4DTV receiver according to procedures specified for your model number. If you have a model 922, move your dish to G1-150. Make sure your green DC light is illuminated, turn off your 4DTV using the Power button, unplug it from the electricity for only 30 seconds, and then plug it back in again. Leave it turned off for 60 minutes. After 60 minutes, turn the 4DTV back on, press Option 6,4,4, and the list should include the W5 icon. From here, you can continue to program it at the correct dish position using the procedures in #1 and #2 above. If you have a model 920 receiver, we recommend that you do a master reset instead of unplugging because it is very risky to unplug a model 920. It is possible to lose the memory and even the unit id number on a model 920 if the Lithium battery is too old.

Why so many monthly rehits?  Back to top

On the last day of every month, Motorola Access Control, sends out a Re-key. This is a signal that keeps all subscribed customers active. It is a requirement that 4dtv Receivers receive this re-key, to remain authorized. Without the re-key; 4DTV receivers do not update properly and likewise lose authorization for subscription programming. Prevention is simple and highly recommended for the last day of each month.

1) Turn the receiver off by 2am Eastern Time. The receiver should move the dish back to Satellite G1 to receive updates, OR:

2) Leave the system on but make sure it is located on any digital Channel that can receive a re-hit. Some examples of channels that can receive re-hits are g1-100, 150, 167 or g5-100 or c3-101 or Go-101.

4DTV Systems commonly tuned into satellite G3 may lose channel authorization at the end of each month without the re-key from Motorola. Satellite G3, is without a data stream capable of receiving re-hits, AKA (Re-authorizations) If the Re-key is not received then a simple re-hit will update the receiver. Self service re-hits are available 24 hours a day at: www.satelliteprogramming.com. Make sure when you request a rehit that the green DC light on the front panel of the 4DTV receiver is in the on position; otherwise you will need to tune to a different location until the light comes on.

How to Perform a Master Reset (M R)?  Back to top

It is sometimes necessary to do a Master Reset (M R) on your 4DTV. This definitely needs to be done if the receiver's TDT count has reached 1920 as this means the memory is full and will no longer accept new information such as new satellites. Usually this procedure is done by licensed professional C-Band technicians, but quite often there are none available at a customer's location and it becomes necessary for a 4DTV owner to perform this operation. This procedure will erase all the all satellite positions, skew settings, limits and LNB settings from the receiver's memory. Reprogramming the receiver will take anywhere from one to two hours.

Please read the following complete instructions for performing a Master Reset (M R) before beginning. SPS is not responsible for any damage due to the use of these instructions. If you do not feel you are capable of performing the M R safely, call a local C-Band satellite technician or Motorola (if under warranty) at 1-800-976-5174 for technical help. Expert advice can also be obtained at www.satforums.com; select 4DTV Rocks! and then either register or sign in as a guest.

1. Record a list of all your satellites and their dish positions. The Dish Position can be found by going to each satellite and pressing Options 5 (press Exit or Go Back to exit). This function will display the Dish Position of that particular satellite. Write down only those that you currently have programmed in correctly. Also write down the East and West limits that are currently programmed into your 4DTV. The new dish positions (after M R) will most likely not be the same as they were before the M R, because the 4DTV will automatically assign dish position 5000 to whatever position the satellite is sitting on when the M R is performed. However, the difference between the satellites will remain the same. Ex: Prior to M R: G5 is at 5010 and G9 is at 5030. After M R G5 might be at 4940 and G9 would then be at 4960. Please note in both cases the position of the satellite is 20 counts apart. (We recommend that you do not program in A1 & A2 as these satellites can cause the TDT count to reach 1920 again).

2. After recording all satellites and their Dish Position, move your dish to the G1 satellite whenever possible and then tune in to a digital channel such as G1-03 or G1-13. Tune these channels to the highest Quality value possible and make sure the DC green light is on before starting the M R. If it is not possible to program in the G1 satellite due to trees, hills, etc., a M R can be performed on any other satellite or at current dish position 5000, if necessary.

3. You are now ready to erase all the satellite locations from your receiver's memory by pressing Options, 6, 7, 7, 8, 7 and Enter on your remote control. This is a hidden menu and the screen on your TV will not change when you press these numbers on your keypad. The receiver should turn itself off and then immediately turn back on again. It will display 888*** and then WM UP on the front of the 4DTV. After several minutes, it will display a time on the display, but probably not the correct time of day.

4. Press the POWER button on your remote control and the display should show a channel number on the front of your receiver, but no satellite number will appear since they have all been erased by the master reset.

5. Push Options 6, 4, 2 on your remote control, set the Linear East or Linear West and LNB Type the same as it was prior to doing the master reset.

6. Press GO BACK, then press 3, 3 and a list of factory default satellites should appear on your TV screen. Scroll by using the arrow keys around the Enter button to G1, (or to whichever satellite you were set on when you started this procedure). Press Enter on your remote control and the TV screen should display the tuning screen for you to tune in the G1 satellite. Use the channel up/down key to change the channel at the top of the screen to G1-11. Then use the arrow key below the Enter button to move down to the auto-peak skew line and press Enter. This only needs to be done if you have a C-Band LNB ¨C it is not necessary if you have a C-Band LNBF. If you have a C-Band LNBF there will be no option on your screen to adjust skew. A picture of EWTN religious channel should appear in the background behind the tuning screen. Change the channel to G1-12 using the channel up/down button, push Enter on the auto-peak skew screen again and a picture of SHOP NBC should appear in the background. It is very important that the picture on G1-11 be tuned using the dish position and skew settings to obtain as perfect picture quality as possible without sparklies, blurring, etc. Then change the channel to G1-13 and look at the number for Signal and Quality at the bottom of the screen. It is important that the Quality number be as high as possible. Model 922 receivers must have a Quality of at least 40 to obtain a "digital lock" (Some older General Instrument 920 receivers must have a Quality reading of at least 20 instead of 40). A green DC light should appear on the front of your 4DTV below the channel 13 number, above the letters DC. You can also use other channels on G1 to try to get a green DC light, like G1-03, and G1-18. After you have a green DC light on a G1 channel, push GO BACK and then ENTER on your remote control to save the settings in memory for G1, then press EXIT once , VIEW once, or GO BACK four times to get out of the tuning screen.

7. Press Option 6, 5 on your remote control and you should have a screen with your unit id at the top and trip counter on the bottom left, and channels counter on the bottom right. Channel count will be approximately 575 at this point. Leave the 4DTV sit on G1-13, G1-03, or G1-18 approximately 30 minutes while the receiver maps into memory all the satellite names, channel names, frequencies, etc. You must have a green DC light on the front of your receiver for this process to work. If you do not have a green DC light, continue to fine tune until one appears (on G1). The channel counter should keep increasing slowly up to approximately 4804 and then stop. Wait 10 more minutes to make sure it is finished counting. Call your program provider (SPS) and ask for a digital rehit. This can also be done by using our online service at www.satelliteprogramming.com. The number on the trip counter should increase from 0 to 5 when your receiver has been authorized. It is possible to download the IPG (Guide) at this time ¨C simply press the Guide button, then the Info button on your remote control and wait about 15 minutes. If you do not wait ¨C the guide will not download properly.

8. Press GO BACK on your remote control to return to the Options screen, then press Option 6, 4, 3 ,3, and you will see that the number of available satellites has increased. Select C4 and press Enter to show the C4 tuning screen. Use the channel up/down key to scroll up to channel 9, which is QVC Shopping Channel (at the time of this writing). Move to the dish position line and use the right arrow key on your remote control to move your satellite dish to the West until you get a good picture on C4-09. CAUTION: Make certain your dish is moving to the West as the dish position numbers increase ¨C no more than 40 counts higher than G1. It is possible to move your dish off the end of the actuator arm causing damage if you move the dish too far. If possible, have someone assist you by actually watching the dish while it is moving. Refer back to your original notes and check to see how far apart C4 is from G1 in order to properly gauge correct distance. It is very important that you tune dish position until you get as good a picture as possible on this channel because your 4DTV will use the dish position for the first two satellites that you program into your 4DTV to calculate where it projects all the other satellites will be located. Press GO BACK and ENTER to store the dish position and skew settings in memory for C4.

9. Press GO BACK and you should be on the SET LIMITS screen. Highlight the West limit and use your right arrow button on your remote control to set the West limit approx. 10 counts higher than where you programmed C4.

10. Press 3 (Program Satellites) and the list of all satellites should reappear on your TV screen. Select C3, push ENTER and scroll to channel C3-7, C SPAN (at the time of this writing). The top line will say "move dish to ####". This is the location that your 4DTV thinks the C3 satellite will be located - based upon the dish position you stored for G1 and C4. That line (Dish Position) should be high-lighted in yellow on your TV screen. Push ENTER on your remote control and the dish will automatically move to that location. A picture of C SPAN should appear on your TV screen behind the tuning screen. If a picture does not appear, scroll to the auto-peak dish position line and press Enter and then after the dish finishes moving (when the Dish Position numbers stop changing), scroll to the auto-peak skew line and hit Enter and a picture should appear. Press GO BACK and then ENTER to save C3 settings. The H (horizontal) and V (vertical) readings (if you have an LNB and not an LNBF) should be approximately 90 degrees apart. Example: H (45) V (-45).

11. Continue using the above procedures to find, tune, and store in memory all the satellites you desire. After you find the Eastern most satellite in your list of satellites, press Option 6, 4, 3 to display the SET LIMITS screen again and move the East Limit approx. 10 positions lower than your Eastern most satellite (usually the W3 satellite). Once again, please use extreme caution not to move your dish off the actuator arm.

12. Now press EXIT and you are finished with the Master Reset!
